Internet of…cities

The sentence ‘we are not alone’ may seem more real in today’s world. No, not due to the appearance of extraordinary creatures but thanks to super smart machines and sensors everywhere. Our daily activities will go through makeovers and process automation.

As the concept of Internet of Things matures, everything may be monitored and adjusted to people’s needs. Internet of smart cities has flourished and is developing pretty quickly.

Let’s find out what exactly it is offering us.

  1. Intelligent cars

Driverless cars? Doesn’t it sound a tad scary, yet exciting? Well, it is the future. Cars will be packed with sensors monitoring the roads and signs, keeping you as safe as possible. They will automatically drive you to the location you requested. It’s going to be a perfect solution for the elderly. All in all – you just need to fully trust a machine.

  1. Smart Lighting

Does it often happen that the street you chose to go is too dark? Or did the lamp posts turn off the moment you need them most? Not anymore. Right now, your fate depends on the sensors. They monitor weather conditions or the level of daylight, simultaneously adjusting the lighting intensity. Not only does it make midnight walks more pleasant, but it also minimises the usage of energy, saving money and, most importantly, the environment.

  1. Waste management

Have you ever passed over a full garbage thinking ‘if only they knew’. Well, nowadays it is bound to change. No worries, no presumptions just loads of sensors. Overflowing garbage cans are the problem of yesterday. Right now, the cans themselves will inform if they are full. This is going to guarantee more efficient dustcarts routs and constant room for the garbage, as they will be emptied regularly. Cleaner cities mean better cities.

  1. River floods

The fear of floods is the daily bread of people living close to aqueducts. Internet of cities will reduce the danger to the minimum because now river or lakes will be monitored from the inside. It will be possible to check any variations in water level or its pressure. Additionally, these devices measure the pollution level and may also be used in dams, wells or streams. After all, we all want to feel secure and in case of emergencies have the enough amount of time to flee.

  1. Public communication platforms

Waiting for the train or a bus is a mundane task, time passes by and you are usually bored. How about intelligent platforms containing all the information you need that can be accessed with a touch of your finger? Sounds interesting? It already is a reality. Cities like NYC have installed these gadgets all over towns. Their main tasks are to inform the citizens about most important information on cities life, entertainment or problems. You can connect with these platforms with any device: smartphone, laptop or a tablet. For now, the screens are only installed in the biggest cities, but who knows what the future holds for us.

All of us remember the movies of the past that were predicting the future. As we all see, most of these prognoses seem to be correct and may I add – even better. What is next for us in terms of Internet of Things? Maybe flying bicycles? Who knows?
