Beginner’s guide to chatbots

Along with the F8 conference, bots bloomed rapidly. Now most of us know that they exist and want to experience them to the fullest. However, if you are among the people who don’t understand the purpose of chatbots and how they work, this blog post is for you.

A lot of us consider mobile devices to be an essential part of our daily lives. Why? Because we were given a lot of possibilities through the years, not only to contact whoever we need to, but also be constantly on top of what’s happening around us thanks to the Internet connection – and that’s when chatbots appear to be a new ‘it’ thing. Thanks to them, the connection between us and our devices may grow even tighter.

But let’s start with the basics…

1. What chatbots really are?

Chatbots are services fuelled by Artificial Intelligence based on the interaction between a user and a bot, which is essentially a computer program. The service provides information on various things depending on its initial aim.

For example, if you need to buy something, you don’t have to look for it yourself since a chatbot can do it for you. All you need to do is type in the kind of thing you need and bots will find the best potential choices for you. It is almost as if you went out to the store and asked a shopping attendant for help.

It is all because, in the future, chatbots are bound to mirror traditional interaction you’d have with people.

2. How good can they be?

The world of bots is still at the very beginning. Some of them are able to have an ordinary conversation with users, whereas the others are at its infancy and can only react to specific commands.

Nevertheless, it must be borne in mind that most chatbots are early prototypes and will develop further in the mere future. F8 conference was the first place they were officially introduced to the wider audience. So it is safe to say that the complexities will come in time.

3. How do they work?

There are two types of bots on the market. The simplest ones work according to rules. They are basic and can answer only to specific questions. If you ask them something out of the box they won’t understand you.
There are also bots that are based on artificial intelligence. They learn our language as the conversation goes and can answer to almost everything.

4. Is there a business opportunity?

Chatbots open many doors for businesses.

How so?

Well, it has been shown that people spend more time using messaging applications than they do on social media. Since chatbots are an indispensable part of messaging apps, they appear to be a great business opportunity because you want to be where all the people are and discover it by yourself.

5. Examples

As it was already mentioned before, bots are quite a new phenomenon. However, you can already find a bot for almost everything. You can have your own personal shopper, weather expert, grocery list master or even a life advice friend ready to offer guidance.

Your imagination is the limit.

Even though chatbots were a part of our lives for years, their actual time is now.
In the world where technology rush only gets greater, bots are an incredibly useful addition. It is, however, an imperative to find the right balance between reality and artificial world of intelligent helpers.
